Competitive advantage of AI will be incalculable but short-lived
It seems like everyone is talking about the competitive advantage of A.I. Artificial intelligence, like all disruptive innovations, offers early adopters a huge competitive advantage. However, that advantage will be relatively short-lived.
Similarities with the lightbulb
In the late 19th century, the electric lightbulb changed the world forever. Suddenly, those with access to Edison’s innovation, were able to break the bonds of darkness and the limitations and inconveniences associated with oil-burning lamps.
Businesses that could afford electric lights, flourished. They could not only offer customers extended business hours, they could improve public safety. But the lightbulb, like all technology, was soon commoditized once they became commonplace, much like every other innovation in human history.
Now, we’re not trying to downplay the impact A.I. is certain have on the world. Without question, that will be utterly incalculable. There is however one distinct difference in this digital age. Today, commoditization will outpace the ability of displaced individuals to be trained for alternative vocations. That’s because A.I.’s competitive advantage is immediately available to everyone on planet Earth, with internet access.
